The first member of the Williams family to come to Michigan was Oliver Williams (1774-1834). In 1808, Oliver, a native of Massachusetts, established a mercantile business at Detroit, trading supplies for furs. In 1815, he moved his family to Detroit and opened a hotel and boarding house called the Yankee. In 1819, Oliver moved to a site northwest of Pontiac, Michigan. It is said that the first school in the county was established in 1821 and operated out of his sheep shed. ...
